Chewing Gum

BRUSH, FLOSS, RINSE, CHEW!

Yes, chew! (BUT NOT AT SCHOOL, OF COURSE!) Some people may be surprised to hear that chewing gum can actually help to prevent cavities in children. But it’s the type of gum you chew that makes a difference in whether it’s helpful
or harmful to your teeth. While chewing gum containing sugar may actually increase your chances of developing a cavity, there is clinical evidence that demonstrates just the opposite for sugar-free gum. And there’s even better news when it comes to chewing
sugar-free gum that is sweetened with xylitol.

Sugar-free gum helps to clean teeth Studies have shown that chewing sugar-free gum after meals and snacks can help rinse off and neutralize the acids released by the bacteria in plaque, which are harmful to tooth enamel. Both the act of chewing and the flavour of the artificial sweeteners in the gum stimulate 10 times the normal rate of saliva flow. Not only does the increased saliva flow neutralize the acids in your mouth, it also washes away food particles, helping to keep your teeth clean. It’s true that chewing gum of any kind increases saliva production, and therefore helps neutralize acid. But the sugar in regular gum effectively cancels out the benefits. So, when choosing gum, the first choice should be sugar-free, but you can get even more out of that stick of gum – with xylitol.

Xylitol reduces decay-causing bacteria Xylitol is a naturally-occurring sweetener, found in fruit and vegetables, and has fewer calories than regular sugar. When sweetened with xylitol, sugar-free gum has the added benefit of inhibiting the growth of Streptococcus mutans, one of the oral bacteria that cause cavities. In the presence of xylitol, the bacteria lose the ability to adhere to the tooth, stunting the cavity-causing process. With xylitol use over a period of time, the types of bacteria in the mouth change and fewer decay-causing bacteria survive on tooth surfaces. More saliva and less acid seems to cause the teeth to remineralize – that is, it actually reverses the progression of decay! Most importantly, chewing gum with xylitol inhibits growth of the strep bacteria which cannot metabolize this sweetener. Less virulent strains of bacteria slip off the teeth and the positive effect of xylitol can last for years. Xylitol-sweetened gum seems to work best when it is chewed routinely just before children’s adult teeth come in – at about age 5 or 6.

Chewing still isn’t for everyone Although chewing sugar-free gum can be beneficial in most instances, there are some cases in which chewing gum is not recommended. For example, if you are experiencing any type of jaw pain or temporomandibular disorder symptoms (TMD/TMJ), you should refrain from chewing gum and talk to your dentist about what options are available to you.

For most people, chewing sugar-free gum (especially gum sweetened with xylitol) can be a good preventive measure in situations when toothbrushing and flossing aren’t practical, but sugar-free or not, chewing gum should never replace good dental hygiene practices.Shop carefully When choosing your gum (or candy), be sure to read the product label carefully, to see if they contain xylitol. Here is a list of a few products that do contain xylitol: Xylitol is great for humans but it is toxic for dogs!Be sure to store your xylitol-containing products safely out of reach of your pets. Do not share any food that may contain xylitol with your dog! In case of emergency, consult your veterinarian immediately.
